2021-2022 Return to School Announcement

July 22, 2021

Dear Parents and Families:

I hope the summer has been enjoyable and relaxing for you and your family. I know the past year and a half has been difficult as we have had to maneuver through COVID and its impact on our lives.

Our planning efforts for 2021-2022 is in the final stages of development. August will be here before we know it, and our top priority as we prepare for a welcome back is the health and safety of our students and staff. Schools are the best and safest place for students to learn and succeed. We are committed to supporting student academic achievement with high-quality and rigorous academic programs that address the needs of all our students.

Last year, I shared with you “Core Values” developed in response to COVID-19. We will emphasize and practice these “Values” for the upcoming school year:

  1. Adhere to COVID-19 safety guidelines to protect the health, safety, and wellness of students and staff.
  2. Identify and develop supports to meet the social and emotional needs of students and staff.
  3. Provide school leaders, teachers, and support staff with training, resources and supports to successfully implement a high-quality instructional program.
  4. Provide differentiated instructional supports to meet the needs of all students.
  5. Provide timely, transparent, and informative communication to staff, parents and community members related to COVID-19 and school re-opening.

COVID-19 required protocols are as follows:

  1. Staff and students will wear a face mask inside and outside.
  2. No physical/social distancing on the bus or in the classroom.
  3. Strictly adhere to the COVID-19 exposure protocol when it comes to contact tracing and quarantine guidelines.
  4. Staff and students will self-screen at home for COVID-19 symptoms before arriving to school site or district office.
  5. Staff and students will sanitize or wash hands frequently.

As we make decisions regarding the new school year, our District is in regular contact with the California Department of Public Health, San Bernardino County Department of Public Health, and superintendents in surrounding school districts to ensure that decisions are aligned with best practice. On July 8, 2021, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) announced new COVID-19 safety guidelines for schools. On July 12, 2021, the State of California adopted and modified those guidelines.

We are planning for a traditional start: in-person, five days a week. If we cannot safely hold traditional school due to COVID-19, the District will work collaboratively with all stakeholders to develop a plan of action to ensure we are prepared for learning.

For those of you who prefer to keep your child in a home learning environment, the District has an independent study program. Information on the program will be shared in the next couple of weeks.

The Board of Trustees is committed to providing a caring, safe and welcoming environment for our students and staff. At the regular Board of Trustees meeting on May 25, 2021, COVID-19 School Opening and Safety Plan for the coming school year was approved. The District has taken great measures to keep students and staff safe:

  • Upgraded ventilation systems at all sites and busses
  • Implemented new sanitization protocols
  • Purchased EPA-registered effective disinfectant
  • Installed non-contact temperature assessment devices and desk shields
  • Purchased Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): masks, sanitizers, desk shields, air purifiers, gowns, etc.
  • Touchless hand sanitizers
  • Touchless paper towel dispensers

Monday, August 9, 2021 is the first day of school. We look forward to a great school year and your child’s school will be communicating with you in the next couple weeks.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support.

Kennon Mitchell, Ph.D.
